Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services
The Honourable Mark Ryan
Palaszczuk Government acknowledges outstanding efforts of Sunshine Coast Police and continues investment in infrastructure
The Palaszczuk Government congratulates the many police officers on the Sunshine Coast who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.
Tomorrow, 85 officers, staff and community members will be recognised for their outstanding commitment to Queensland.
Among them, five officers and two staff members will be presented with the Queensland Police Bravery Medal for acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances.
Their commitment deserves the very best support of government.
That’s why the Palaszczuk Government continues to invest in important infrastructure.
The most recent state budget commits $200,000 to design and planning work for new Police Stations at Nambour and Coolum.
This new Police infrastructure will happen during this term of the Palaszczuk Government.
The government makes no apologies for taking time to properly plan these vital new pieces of infrastructure.
It’s critical that fit-for-purpose Police facilities be delivered in the right locations and at the right cost.
While the Queensland Police Service has land holdings in both Nambour and Coolum upon which new facilities can be built, it may be that better, more cost-efficient methods of infrastructure delivery are available.
For example, the leasing of existing, unoccupied buildings with the scope for appropriate capital improvement may deliver taxpayers a better bang for their buck.
These are considerations best left to infrastructure and financial experts.
It is only right that these thorough investigations are undertaken, appropriate consultation occurs and the operational requirements of the Queensland Police Service are fully considered.
A typical Police Station can cost millions of dollars.
It’s a lot of taxpayer money and it must be spent prudently.
Major infrastructure doesn’t happen overnight.
Make no mistake though, these projects will become reality during this term of Government.
It’s important to remember that the Nambour Police Station was an election commitment made by the Premier.
The LNP made no such commitment. In stark contrast to the LNP, the Palaszczuk Government is committed to building the infrastructure to deliver a better, safer Queensland.
