Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has called on racing fans to help support the National Jockeys Trust, a public charitable trust dedicated to providing funds and other benefits for injured jockeys going through financial difficulties.

Mr Hinchliffe, who is attending the National Jockeys Trust Multicultural Race Day at Doomben today, said it was important the racing fraternity dug deep to help give something back to the jockeys.

“Jockeys are at the coalface of our industry and their courage, dedication and remarkable athleticism are on show every day,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“In every race around the State, in every track session, they put their bodies on the line, not only to pursue their passion but also to support their families.

“Sadly, racing is no stranger to serious injury and as with anyone, jockeys are not immune to financial hardship, particularly when they are physically unable to work.

“Today, I urge everyone to support the National Jockeys Trust so they can continue to carry out their important work.”

As Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Mr Hinchliffe also praised the Brisbane Racing Club for its involvement in Queensland Multicultural Month.

“Throughout August we are celebrating one of the great strengths of Queensland, our cultural diversity,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“There are more than 100 events happening across the State, including celebrating community champions of diversity at the Queensland Multicultural Awards.

“During the month, many of Brisbane’s bridges and buildings are being bathed in diverse colours, while a Multicultural Plaza music stage will entertain at the Ekka and performers will travel to regional Queensland to host free workshops and shows.

“I want to encourage everyone to find out what events are on near you and get involved in Queensland Multicultural Month.”
