The Honourable Leeanne Enoch
Love for nature grows on National Tree Day
The Palaszczuk Government is encouraging Queenslanders to get back to nature as part of National Tree Day, being celebrated today.
Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said today was about celebrating Queensland’s beautiful natural environment and learning about how we can protect it for future generations.
“National Tree Day is the country’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event and highlights the important role our vegetation has in providing habitats for our valuable native species,” Ms Enoch said.
“Since National Tree Day started in 1996, more than 4 million people have planted over 24 million native trees and plants. And the initiative continues to grow every year.
“This important day also helps remind us about the importance of nature in our daily lives and what we can do to ensure it is protected.
“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to protecting our environment, and earlier this year we delivered on our election commitment to re-introduce strict vegetation management laws to end broadscale clearing and protect our environment, the Great Barrier Reef, and our climate.
“These tree clearing laws are making a real difference to species that are under threat, while also helping to ensure we meet our global commitments to decrease carbon emissions.”
Ms Enoch said keeping trees in the ground was a simple and effective way to reduce emissions.
“Our vegetation management laws, passed earlier this year, along with our $500 million flagship Land Restoration Fund and carbon farming initiatives, will help us meet our target of zero net emissions by 2050.”
Ms Enoch encouraged everyone to get outdoors and connect with nature today.
“National Tree Day is a great opportunity to do something positive for the environment, and help protect it for future generations.”
