The Honourable Mark Bailey
Evans Landing Wharf to undergo face-lift
North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) will refurbish a popular recreational fishing and operational wharf in Far North Queensland.
The $2.6 million project, being undertaken on behalf of Rio Tinto, will include replacing the wharf deck at Evans Landing Wharf, Port of Weipa.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the tender process was complete and a project start date was being finalised.
“Queensland-based Wisely Group is the appointed contractor,” Ms Lui said.
“The refurbishment of this important piece of local infrastructure is a great partnership example of government working with private industry to ensure a better outcome for Queenslanders.
“We expect the works will begin early next month and take about three months to complete.”
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said during the upgrade, public access to the Evans Landing Wharf and the nearby parking area will be restricted to ensure public safety.
“NQBP is working with Rio Tinto and operational users of the wharf to minimise disruption to business,” Mr Bailey said.
“We recognise that Evans Landing Wharf is used by the Weipa community as a recreational facility as well as being an operational asset for the Port of Weipa.
“The Weipa community will be kept informed as the project progresses.”
