Wide Bay Burnett to get better, safer roads

Twelve projects across the Wide Bay Burnett region have been given the green light to rollout in 2018/19 under the Palaszczuk Government’s Safer Roads Sooner initiative.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the long-running initiative continued to provide tangible safety benefits for Queenslanders.

“Safer Roads Sooner is one of our strongest road safety improvement programs and focuses on high benefit, cost effective road engineering treatments that address known and potential crash locations,” Mr Bailey said.

“Any death on our roads is one too many, so initiatives like this are vital to making sure we have the safest possible road network available to motorists.”

Safety improvements in the Wide Bay Burnett District will include:

-       Bundaberg region

o   $94,500 to widen and construct a centre median on Gooburrum Road, at the Moore Park Road intersection, install a flag light and replace the existing give way signs with stop signs

o   $42,000 to improve signage and linemarking and install a flag light at the Rosedale Road and Mercers Road/Witts Road intersection at Meadowvale

o   $381,000 to provide a wider road shoulder on Rosedale Road at the Moorlands Road intersection and install a flag light and guard rail

o   $315,000 to construct a dedicated left-turn lane, offset from the through lane, from the Isis Highway into Palomino Avenue to improve visibility for motorists turning out of Palomino Avenue

-       Gympie region

o   $173,000 to install chevron alignment markers on Gympie–Brooloo Road between Reeves Road and Yabba Creek Road

o   $276,300 to construct a dedicated right-turn lane on Tin Can Bay Road at the Maryborough–Cooloola Road intersection near Tin Can Bay, to separate through and turning traffic

o   $94,000 to install vehicle activated signs, chevron alignment markers and truck tipping signs on the Burnett Highway about four kilometres north of Goomeri

o   $35,000 to apply audio tactile line marking on a section of the Wide Bay Highway, just west of the Batts Road intersection

-       North Burnett region

o   $75,000 to install vehicle activated signs on a sharp bend along the Burnett Highway, about 25 kilometres north of Monto, to alert motorists if they are travelling too fast

-       South Burnett region

o   $65,000 to improve safety on a section of Maidenwell–Bunya Mountains Road, about 12km west of Maidenwell, through the installation of improved signage

o   $58,000 to improve safety on a section of Maidenwell–Bunya Mountains Road, about 2.5km west of Maidenwell, through the installation of improved  signage to better delineate the alignment of the road, and through providing a clear zone to ensure a safer roadside

o   $183,000 to undertake curve widening works, install improved signage and apply audio tactile linemarking on a section of the Bunya Highway near the Webbs Road intersection

Mr Bailey said the upgrades were all scheduled to take place in the 2018-19 financial year.

“In preparation for the works, project officers will contact surrounding residents at each site and provide information about the scope of works and any impacts,” he said.

“This announcement is fantastic news for each area and I would like to thank motorists in advance for their patience when my department undertakes the works.”
