The bell tolls for old toll building

Works to remove and demolish a vacant building next to the Sunshine Motorway at Mountain Creek is expected to begin at the end of the month.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the old administration building was built in 1990 when the motorway was first opened as a toll road.

“Tolls ceased being collected on the motorway in 1996,” Mr Bailey said.

“Since that time, the building was used by the Sunshine Coast Council as a Counter Disaster and Emergency Services headquarters.

“However, the building hasn’t been used since 2013.

“Due to increased traffic volumes on the on-ramp and safety concerns with accessing the site, the building cannot be leased.”

Mr Bailey said work to remove the building was scheduled to start at the end of July and take about two months to complete, weather permitting.

“Works will be undertaken between 6am and 6pm and every effort will be made to reduce impacts to nearby residents and motorists,” he said.

“Changed traffic conditions will be in place to ensure the safety of motorists and road workers. 

“We encourage motorists to drive to the changed traffic conditions and obey work signs for their own safety and the safety of road workers.”
