82 First Year Constables graduate

Police Minister Mark Ryan today welcomed the latest QPS recruits.

The 82 First Year Constables, 41 men and 41 women, were sworn in at a graduation ceremony at the Queensland Police Service Academy in Oxley after successfully completing 25 weeks of intensive training.

“Today’s intake will bring a depth of experience to the service and on behalf of the Palaszczuk Government I thank them for the life-changing decision they have taken to serve their fellow Queenslanders,” Minister Ryan said.

“Before starting their training they were working in a wide variety of jobs including engineer, graphic design, teacher, intelligence officer, sales, solicitor, accountancy, travel agent, flight attendant, prison officer and scientist.

“Some were born in Queensland but there are others from New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, South Africa, Switzerland, Nepal and China as well as elsewhere in Australia.

“Wherever they started their lives they are Queenslanders now and Queenslanders who will work hard to keep their fellow Queenslanders safe. For that they deserve our gratitude and our best wishes for a long and successful career.”

The new officers will mostly be deployed in the south of the state – 17 to stations in North Brisbane, 16 in South Brisbane, 10 in Central Region including four on the Sunshine Coast, 17 in the Southern Region, 11 in Logan and 11 on the Gold Coast.

Deployments are based on the resources, needs and requirements of QPS.

Acting Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said the training program had provided the recruits with a quality foundation so they could deliver an excellent service to the community and ensure their policing skills have developed to a level necessary for operational policing as First Year Constables under supervision.

“I remember my induction ceremony well and I hope that this morning’s ceremony is a memory that each FYC carries with them throughout a successful career within the QPS.

“The role of a police officer is like no other – responsible for the safety and security of Queensland. There is no doubt that each of these new officers will experience some challenging situations, however there will also be many rewarding and humbling times.

“I wish luck to every officer in their career and feel confident that they will uphold the values expected of a police officer in Queensland.”
