Statement from the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice

In December 2016 Federal Court Justice Mortimer found in favour of Lex, Cecilia and Agnes Wotton, and ruled that the conduct of certain QPS officers in 2004 contravened section 9(1) Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and that the actions of certain police were unlawful.

The settlement scheme and apology have now been formally approved by the Federal Court, and the apology published today in the Palm Island Voice, Townsville Bulletin, and the Courier Mail.

We all hope this provides some closure for the Palm Island community and that we can move forward together.
