The Honourable Leeanne Enoch
More funding for Queensland conservation councils
Important environmental protection work will be boosted throughout Queensland, with the Palaszczuk Government committing $840,000 to conservation councils.
Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said this funding, over the next five years, would be provided to the Queensland Conservation Council and nine regional conservation councils to continue their activities that go a long way to protecting the environment.
The Minister met with conservation groups from around the state at an environmental roundtable earlier this week.
“This is wonderful news for our environment, our beautiful wildlife, our landscapes and our precious natural resources,” Ms Enoch said.
“The councils are already receiving $490,000 per year in ongoing base funding and will now receive an additional $350,000 in funding per year, starting next month.
“The Palaszczuk Government has long recognised the important role that the conservation sector plays in the development of this state’s environmental policy and programs.
“Through their valuable education campaigns and advocacy services the funding recipients are effective at increasing awareness of environmental issues at both a local and state level.
“The funding is provided to assist the recipient’s with their ongoing operating costs and it will ensure that they are able to continue to provide these services on behalf of their local communities.”
The recipients include the Queensland Conservation Council, Gold Coast Conservation Council, Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Darling Downs Environment Council, Mackay Conservation Group, Wide Bay Burnet Environment Council, Capricorn Coast Conservation Council, Gladstone Conservation Council, North Queensland Conservation Council, Cairns and Far North Environment Council.
“These conservation councils are some of Queensland’s leading non-government environment and conservation groups,” Ms Enoch said.
“Members of these groups contribute their time and expertise to protecting Queensland’s environment, and the Palaszczuk Government is pleased to support them and the work that they do in protecting our state.”
