Palaszczuk Government continues its investment in policing

More police, more police stations, more technology, new police boats, more specialist officers and more support for at-risk youths are key elements of the Palaszczuk Government's 2018/19 budget. 

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to giving the Queensland Police Service the resources and personnel it needs to keep Queenslanders safe,"  Police Minister Mark Ryan said.

“We have more police personnel than ever before, they are better qualified, better trained and better equipped than ever before.

“I recently visited police officers in remote areas including Kowanyama on the western side of the Cape and Thursday Island in the Torres Strait.

“I came away from those far flung places assured the Queensland Police Service is properly resourced to keep Queenslanders safe no matter where they live.

“This budget builds on the Palaszczuk Government’s ongoing investment in policing but also looks firmly to the future, allocating funds for emerging threats including terrorism.

“But importantly it also delivers the funding and programs that help vulnerable members of the community including at-risk youths and the innocent victims of domestic violence." 

2018/19 Budget – Key items 

• 15.7 million investment enhancing counter-terrorism capabilities, including:
  • 85 new counter terrorism specialists embedded statewide (part of the Palaszczuk Government’s plan for an additional 535 police over four years); and
  • The establishment of a new, dedicated counter-terrorism police command
• $2.4 million to start construction of new policing hub at Arundel (total project cost $11.5 million)
• $5.4 million to replace eight water police boats
• $4 million to fund 24 new domestic and family violence co-ordinators
• Funding of Project Booyah continues (a total of $7.365 million over five years for the award winning early intervention program that helps steer troubled youths away from a life of crime)
• Roll-out of 1400 Qlite mobile tablet devices continues giving police enhanced mobility and rapid response capability ($5.9 million investment over 3 years)
