The Palaszczuk Government has called for tenders to extend car parking and lay additional pedestrian paths at one of Brisbane’s most popular parkland destinations.
Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch said major improvements to visitor access was just one of the benefits from Stage Two of the total $2.6 million upgrade at the Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre at The Gap.
“The latest improvements will ensure Walkabout Creek remains a popular tourism destination in its own right as well as being the capital city’s gateway to the spectacular 36,000-hectare D’Aguilar National Park,” Ms Enoch said.
“The works will provide an additional 36 parking spaces at the centre’s new southern carpark and new pedestrian access from the nearby TransLink Park ‘n’ Ride car park to improve accessibility for visitors travelling to Walkabout Creek by public transport.
“Importantly the improvements will provide full disabled access to the facility’s existing Events Lawn and Activity Trail, including to within 10 metres of the ‘beach’ at the Enoggera Reservoir swimming area.
“The upgrades will also include modernising the centre’s entry point, café deck expansion and improvements to interpretive areas and other public spaces.”
Minister Enoch said construction work for Stage Two of the Walkabout Creek was expected to be completed by the end of 2018, in time for the summer season.
“Meanwhile, Stage One of Walkabout Creek’s upgrades is now complete, which included the dinosaur dig sandpit, with prehistoric relics and fossils to find, family activity trails, nature play areas, an events lawn, the Enoggera Reservoir beach and mountain bike skills course, all of which are very popular.
“Walkabout Creek is just beautiful, with its subtropical rainforest, expanses of eucalypt woodland and spectacular views to Moreton Bay, this has long been known as ‘the bush in Brisbane’s backyard’.”
Situated on Mount Nebo Road at The Gap, the centre is just 12 kilometres from Brisbane’s city centre.
