Vastly improved car parking for Varsity Lakes commuters

A Palaszczuk Government Commonwealth Games car parking legacy will benefit Varsity Lakes commuters, with a further 81 parks are set to open at Varsity Lakes train station today.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the newly upgraded temporary car parks had been well-used during the Commonwealth Games.

“Following the Games, a relatively straight-forward upgrade was identified as a quick win for commuters as 81 new car parks are added to our park ‘n’ ride network,” Mr Bailey said.

“Temporary lighting and CCTV has been installed and remedial work such as repairs to the car park surface, line marking and fencing was also undertaken over the past month.

“Following these remedial works to improve safety and usability, there are now 174 temporary overflow car parks in place while longer term planning for the site occurs.”  

Mr Bailey said the vacant land around Varsity Lakes train station was reserved for future use as a Transit Oriented Development (TOD), and additional commuter car parking for the train station.

“There are currently 305 permanent car spaces at Varsity Lakes train station, and using temporary parking including the former Commonwealth Games parking to increase the number of parks is a common sense outcome that benefits commuters.”

He said TOD opportunities were identified at train stations where the state owns adjacent land that is surplus to rail requirements.

“This type of development typically promotes increased use of public transport as well as improved pedestrian and cycle connectivity with rail stations and any associated bus interchanges,” Mr Bailey said.

“The vibrant space created by a TOD means more passive surveillance and provides a sense of security around train stations.”
