Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services
The Honourable Mark Ryan

MORE OFFICERS GRADUATE TO CORRECTIONAL CENTRES

A class of 26 new custodial officers graduated from the Queensland Corrective Services Academy today in front of the Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) Minister Mark Ryan and Commissioner Peter Martin.

The graduation was one of many planned for around Queensland in 2018 as QCS maintains its commitment to ensuring appropriate staffing of its facilities in response to prisoner numbers.

Minister Ryan and Commissioner Martin joined other dignitaries for the ceremony at the correctional services precinct at Wacol.

“Queensland Corrective Services plays a vital role in ensuring public safety across the State through the humane containment and rehabilitation of offenders,” Minister Ryan said.

“These graduates are joining a workforce which is doing an excellent job in an often under-recognised field. It isn’t an easy or glamourous job, but every single Queenslander is safer for their work, and I thank them for it.”

The graduates will now join their colleagues at a number of correctional centres and commands within Queensland Corrective Services, including:

  • nine officers to Borallon Training and Correctional Centre
  • 15 officers to Woodford Correctional Centre
  • two officers to Escort and Support Branch.

One officer from Borallon Training and Correctional Centre received the Australian National Medal for 15 years long and diligent service during the ceremony and eight officers received their Diploma of Correctional Administration.

Commissioner Martin said the new graduates were following a fine tradition developed by the many QCS officers who performed a vital public safety service professionally and ethically.

“It is a wonderful combination to be celebrating the graduation of new officers while acknowledging the hard work and commitment of an officer who has committed so many years to making Queensland a safer place for all of us,” Commissioner Martin said.

“I would like to congratulate everyone recognised here today, and wish all a safe and successful career at QCS.”
