Nambour Hospital will see $86 million boost

The Palaszczuk Government is investing $86.239 million to redevelop the Nambour General Hospital and grow capacity to meet the needs of a growing and ageing population.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles yesterday announced the Detailed Business Case for the redevelopment of Nambour Hospital had been endorsed.

“The Nambour Hospital redevelopment will include refurbishing and expanding the Mental Health Inpatient Unit to 44 beds and the Emergency Department to 31 spaces,” Mr Miles said.

“A new Same Day Rehabilitation Unit will be built with 15 chairs and the kitchen will be refurbished to meet modern standards.

“The hospital will see many units upgraded, relocated or replaced including Central Sterilising, Renal, Oncology, Acute and Restorative Care, Surgical Inpatient and Orthopaedic.”

“This is a win for the local community and demonstrates our government’s commitment to enhancing frontline services to the region.

“While the role of Nambour Hospital has changed since the opening of Sunshine Coast University Hospital, it will continue to provide a range of clinical services including an emergency department, inpatient and outpatient services, as well as community services.

“Nambour Hospital plays an essential role in providing healthcare to the growing Nambour population.

“It will also continue to support the tertiary services offered by Sunshine Coast University Hospital by providing a hub for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital sub-acute service, a large volume of low-acuity surgery, emergency care for residents of Nambour and the surrounding region and mental health services.”

Mr Miles said the design of NGH would involve extensive consultation to ensure key issues for patients and consumers are addressed.

“This will include the establishment of a Friends of NGH working group that will work in partnership with the design team and health service to improve design and balancing the interests of the clinical needs through presenting the consumer perspective,” he said.

“Construction is due to commence in the first quarter of 2019 with an anticipated completion of the project in December 2022.”

The Nambour General Hospital redevelopment was announced as a priority project for the Queensland Government in the 2016/17 State Budget funded through the Advancing Queensland Health Infrastructure Program (AQHIP).
