Conference promotes $4 billion international education sector

Queensland is becoming a destination of choice for international students, with a record 5,660 international students studying in schools around the state.

Education Minister Grace Grace, speaking at the Department of Education International Conference in Brisbane today, said the International Education and Training sector contributed $4.135 billion to the Queensland economy in 2016 -17.

“Queensland’s reputation as a great place to study is growing in international markets,” Ms Grace said.

“There’s no doubt our state’s popularity as a preferred study destination is thanks to our high-quality educational offerings, safe environment, enviable weather and laidback lifestyle.

“Overall, more than 5,660 overseas students studied in Queensland’s state, independent and Catholic schools in 2017.

“There are more than 2,300 students studying International Student Programs in Queensland state schools alone.”

Ms Grace thanked conference delegates from Australia and overseas for playing an important role in promoting Queensland’s multi-billion dollar education and training sector.

“Thank you for your efforts in singing the praises of Queensland’s education system around the world,” she said.

“The Palaszczuk Government recognises the value of international education and we are absolutely committed to growing the sector.

“The best part is, our international students are giving a big thumbs up to their educational experience here in Queensland, with 96 per cent of those studying at state schools saying they would recommend our program to others.”

Ms Grace encouraged Department of Education International Conference participants to continue their support of a globalised education sector.

“The Palaszczuk Government believes that building students’ skills to become global citizens is essential for young people to succeed and for the development of our modern world,” she said.

“As the state’s largest school sector international education provider, the Department of Education aims to embed intercultural awareness and diversity within our schools and communities.

“This means giving international students the best possible experience inside and outside the classroom during their stay.”

Today’s conference included guests from as far afield as China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Papua New Guinea, United Arab Emirates and Nauru.
