Let’s innovate for thriving age-friendly Queensland communities

The Advancing Queensland: Age-friendly community grants round two are now open, providing funding of $25,000 to $100,000 for innovative projects that will help make Queensland’s thriving communities more inclusive of seniors.

Opening the grants today, Minister for Seniors Coralee O'Rourke encouraged councils, organisations, not-for-profit groups and the community to step-up to the challenge of creating an age-friendly Queensland.

“This year we are looking for projects that will focus on the areas of civic participation and employment, community support and health services, and respect and social inclusion,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“I’m very keen to see more resourceful, creative, big ideas for how we can improve life for our seniors.

“Already we’re seeing the fantastic projects from the first round come to life that will make a big difference for seniors living in their communities and I look forward to seeing many more in this round. Total funding of $1 million is available in 2018/19.”

As one of the 12 recipients of the 2017-18 round of the Advancing Queensland: Age-friendly community grants, Gold Coast based Village Community Services Community Development Officer Jennifer Schofieldknows all too well the value of the grants for the We’ll Get You There project for seniors.

“The grant that we know as Assist Travel – We’ll Get You There has opened up many avenues for over 60’s accessing travel options on the Gold Coast,” Ms Schofield said.

“This was an amazing grant, providing our centre with the opportunity to close a gap that was very prominent in our community.

“I encourage other services to apply and create magic in their area.”
