Minister welcomes new Police Recruits

Minister for Police Mark Ryan and Commissioner Ian Stewart welcomed 70 new police officers and two new police dogs (PDs) to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) after a graduation ceremony was held at the QPS Academy, Oxley campus this afternoon.

Graduating as First Year Constables (FYC), the new officers completed 25 weeks of intensive training. 

The recruit training program aims to provide recruits with a quality foundation so that they can deliver an excellent service to the community and ensure their policing skills have developed to a level necessary for operational policing as First Year Constables under supervision.

Of the 70 officers, 19 are graduates of the third Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Recruit Preparatory Program.

This is a 10 week preparatory training program targeting recruit applicants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to prepare them for mainstream recruit training.

This program is undertaken prior to commencement of the mainstream Recruit Training Program.

Police Minister Mark Ryan congratulated the graduates.

“Your decision to commit to a working life in service of the public is admirable and to be commended”, he said.

Commissioner Stewart congratulated the FYCs on their graduation and announced that they would be positioned in the Brisbane, Central, Northern, South Eastern and Southern regions to commence their careers.

“These allocations are based on the resources, needs and requirements of the Service.

“We have allocated 27 First Year Constables to the Brisbane Region, 14 to the Central Region, seven to Northern Region, 17 to the South Eastern Region and five to the Southern Region,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“I remember my induction ceremony well and I hope that this afternoon’s ceremony is a memory that each officer carries with them throughout a long and successful career within the QPS.”

 The new FYCs will be initially deployed to the following areas:

Brisbane Region

North Brisbane District 14

South Brisbane District 13     

Central Region

Capricornia District 5

Wide Bay District  4

Sunshine Coast District 5

NORTHERN Region

Far Northern District 3

Northern District  4  

South Eastern Region

Logan District 7

Gold Coast District 10

Southern Region

Moreton District  2

Darling Downs District 2

South West District 1

The QPS also welcomed two new dogs to its ranks today as part of the ceremony.

PD Ice and his handler Sergeant Darren Breuer will perform as a Drug Detection Dog Team in Brisbane. PD Ice is a 17-month-old yellow Labrador and is the youngest dog ever to complete the drug detection course.

PD Eddie and his handler Senior Constable Matthew Dauber will perform as a General-Purpose Dog Team in Brisbane. PD Eddie is a 20-month-old German Shepherd.
