New grants program opens to boost Neighbourhood Centres

Neighbourhood Centres across Queensland can share in $550,000 of Palaszczuk Government funding for one-off grants to run events, deliver projects, or to purchase equipment to help make their communities thrive.

Minister for Communities Coralee O'Rourke today (9 May) announced that the new Thriving Queensland Communities Grants program would open on 21 May while at the Queensland Council of Social Services (QCOSS) Roundtable in Townsville.

“Everyday thousands of Queenslanders walk through the doors of the state’s 124 Neighbourhood Centres for information, advice, counselling and support,” she said.

“Neighbourhood centres are a hub for local services and support – from playgroups and parenting programs, to housing and homelessness services, education and training programs and even visiting medical clinics.

“They really are vital in making our communities thrive.

“That’s why I’m delighted we will be providing one-off grants of between $2,000 and $10,000 to support neighbourhood centres so they can continue to deliver these much-needed services and support individuals and families who need a helping hand.”

Applications for grants will open on 21 May and close on 5pm 22 June.

The grants will be coordinated by the neighbourhood centres peak body, the Queensland Families and Communities Association.

Mrs O’Rourke said this investment highlighted the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment towards building a stronger, more sustainable Queensland.

“We recognise as local needs grow so does the need for more support and better services,” she said.

“This new grant program will ensure Neighbourhood Centres have the resources they need to deliver new projects, events and workshops and expand their support – particularly to more vulnerable Queenslanders.

“It also means more people have access to local services when they decide to reach out and seek support.”
