A cool blue oasis has officially opened in the outback town of Jericho with locals, families and visitors making a splash at the almost $1.8 million swimming pool complex.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe joined the Barcaldine Mayor, Councillors and locals to officially open the much-loved community meeting place.

“There can be nothing better than to cool off with a splash in the local pool, especially in an outback town where the mercury can hit the high-40s,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“I know this region is home to more than 70 primary school age children who are already reaping the benefits of these facilities with learn-to-swim classes awash with dozens of potential champions.

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to have provided $870,000 in grants to the Barcaldine Regional Council for this project which is all about improving regional liveability.”

Barcaldine Regional Council Mayor Rob Chandler commended the State Government for making the funds available.

“This vital piece of community infrastructure in now a reality thanks to the partnership between the State Labor Government and the Barcaldine Regional Council,” Cr Chandler said.

“A pool is the very heart of any community for cooling off, for tourism, hydro-therapy, school swimming lessons and learn-to-swim classes and it is fantastic to see the community enjoying the facility.

“It has been 10 years since we sought funding to build this pool and once again I thank the Minister for opening the pool and helping us complete the project for the community of Jericho.”

The complex includes a 25 metre, six-lane pool, an ablution block, kiosk and plant room as well as shade sails, safety fencing and lighting.
