New Palaszczuk Government grants program supports reconciliation across Queensland

Forty community celebrations will be funded by the Palaszczuk Government through the new Celebrating Reconciliation Small Grants Program.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Jackie Trad today announced the first successful applicants under the new program.

“The Palaszczuk Government will provide local community groups with grants of up to $2,500 to help promote reconciliation at forty grassroots events across Queensland,” Ms Trad said.

“This year’s theme for National Reconciliation Week – Don’t Keep History a Mystery – encourages everyone to talk honestly about the incredible historical trauma inflicted on First Nations people in this country.

“To genuinely address the ongoing gap in outcomes between indigenous and non-indigenous Queenslanders we must move together towards reconciliation.

“I’m so proud to be able to help to spread the message of reconciliation and I want to encourage the entire community to be part of Queensland’s reconciliation journey.

“The funding we’ve enabled will allow a range of community activities to occur, including cultural celebrations showcasing and sharing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, traditional performances, storytelling and bush tucker during and around National Reconciliation Week.

“With great events right across Queensland, there’s something for everybody from inner-Brisbane, to up north in the Torres Strait, south to Coolangatta and west to Windorah.

“This new funding initiative will also allow local organisations and councils to take part in truth-telling around Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.

“These inclusive grassroots events will invite all Queenslanders to join our state’s reconciliation journey by building respectful relationships, broader cultural awareness and acceptance of our shared history.

National Reconciliation Week is a national campaign held each year from 27 May to 3 June, and commemorates two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey—the successful 1967 referendum and the 1992 High Court Mabo decision.
