Minister throws support behind women’s national champs
Elite women’s rugby league will take centre stage on the Gold Coast in June with the NRL today revealing Owen Park at Southport will host the Harvey Norman Women’s National Championship in June.
Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the championship scheduled for June 1-3 would help to drive visitors to the Coast.
“Major events are an important part of Queensland’s booming tourism industry,” she said.
“For every dollar we spend on major events, we generate around $10 for our economy – that’s one reason we’re so passionate about supporting the growth of the rugby league women’s game in Queensland.”
Ms Jones said for the first time an Australian Defence Force squad would compete in the six-side competition alongside Queensland City, Queensland Country, NSW City, NSW Country and Combined Affiliate States.
“To have such a great tournament on the Coast so soon after the Commonwealth Games is a vote of confidence in the Gold Coast as a major events destination,” she said.
“Having hosted the most successful Commonwealth Games in history, more and more sporting organisations are recognising that Queensland and in particular the Gold Coast is the place to be.
“I look forward to continuing to work with the NRL to bring more rugby league content to Queensland.”
NRL Senior Manager of the Women’s Elite Program, Tiffany Slater said the Championship provided an extended pathway opportunity for players to compete for their region, with the aim of progressing to State and National representation in the future.
“The Championship is one of several women’s rugby league matches and events throughout 2018,” Ms Slater said.
“We’re in the middle of State Competitions, we’ve got State of Origin in June, the Premiership in September, and a Test Match against New Zealand in October.
“There’s a lot more women’s rugby league action to come, which is exciting for players and fans alike.”
