Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services
The Honourable Mark Ryan
Competition launched to help stop alcohol-fuelled violence
A competition to help change behaviour and raise awareness about alcohol-fuelled violence on the Gold Coast was launched today.
Police Minister Mark Ryan said the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Palaszczuk Government was committed to stopping alcohol-fuelled violence.
“It has no place in our society,” Mr Ryan said.
“We want to remind everyone that alcohol inhibits your ability to make rational decisions, decisions that you could live to regret.
"The Palaszczuk Government has a zero tolerance approach to alcohol fuelled violence.
"We have a strong record in legislative and practical reform when it comes to alcohol-fuelled violence.
"The Palaszczuk Government has committed $4 million over four years to police and overtime and travel allowance in Safe Night Precincts (SNPs) and locally-based alcohol research and education initiatives."
A review of assault offences over a two-year period in the Gold Coast District in and around licensed premises identified male university students and male trade workers, aged between 22 and 26, as being at a high risk in both offender and victim categories for alcohol-related violence.
Gold Coast District Superintendent Craig Hanlon said the competition was aimed at the target demographic to help change their attitude to alcohol-fuelled violence.
“Entrants are asked to submit original multimedia content that captures a strong message to help change behaviour and raise awareness on alcohol-fuelled violence,” Superintendent Hanlon said.
“The aim is to help reduce alcohol-fuelled violence incidents and engage the target demographic to think about consequences by using peer-to-peer messaging.”
The winning entry will feature on the QPS social media channels and myPolice sites, and be used in crime prevention presentations.
The competition is open to Gold Coast District tertiary and trade students along with Gold Coast District year 11/12 (and equivalent) students.
Prizes to be won include a Da Vinci Pro 3D Printer, Oppo R11 Plus mobile phone, a 128GB Apple iPad and Beats by Dre Headphones.
