Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey
Central station turns green and gold in support of our Aussie heroes
Brisbane’s Central train station has been coloured green and gold, as Queensland welcomes thousands of spectators during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey said a new multi-coloured LED light installation at the station had made its debut in green and gold ahead of the sporting spectacular, which kicks off with the Opening Ceremony tonight.
“With only hours to go until the biggest sporting event Australia will see this decade, we’re getting behind our athletes by proudly sporting our Aussie colours in a dynamic light installation at Brisbane’s Central station,” Mr Bailey said.
“A soft green and gold wave will adorn the ceiling in the station’s foyer throughout the Games, in support of all the athletes who will be representing Australia on the Gold Coast, who we are extremely proud of.
“Central station will be a key transport junction throughout the Games and, with tens of thousands of commuters expected to pass through its gates on their way to and from the Gold Coast venues.
“We wantto set the tone for the festivities from the moment games-goers commence their journey, until they return home.
“The installation will not only be used throughout the Games, but – with various colour options – can also be used to mark or celebrate important events in the future, much like the iconic Story Bridge.”
The light installation marks the finishing touches on the $6 million upgrade of Central station ahead of the Commonwealth Games, part of a wider $67 million station improvement program.
These works included:
- Extensive maintenance to escalators, lifts and other assets
- Painting, industrial cleaning, replacement of the outer-concourse roof to provide more natural light and cooling insulation
- The installation of new platform seating, overhead fans, floor markings and decals.”
Mr Bailey said ahead of the main calendar of GC2018 events kicking off from Thursday (5 April), rail customers were reminded that service changes will be in place across the South East Queensland (SEQ) rail until 20 April.
“As we prepare to welcome thousands of additional customers travelling between Brisbane and the Gold Coast throughout the Games period, Gold Coast line trains will more than triple during this time, running on average every ten minutes for most of the day,” Mr Bailey said.
“Despite this significant increase, Gold Coast line stations and services will be exceptionally busy throughout the Games, particularly for major events, so we encourage spectators to please plan ahead by visiting the Get Set for the Games website or by using the journey planner on the official GC2018 app.
“Service changes will also be in place across the wider SEQ rail network until April 20 and we encourage customers to plan ahead.
“We thank rail customers for their patience and understanding as we support a successful GC2018.”
