Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services
The Honourable Mark Ryan
$250,000 reward for information about Kuraby murder
Police Minister Mark Ryan has announced the approval for a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Abdul Basith Mohammed in Kuraby in October, 2017.
“Abdul Basith’s death was a tragedy and I’m sure it has taken its toll on his family and friends over the previous months,” Mr Ryan said.
“I offer my sincere sympathy to Abdul Basith’s family and friends who have had no respite from this ordeal as the investigation has continued over holidays which are normally times of reflection with loved ones.
“I urge anyone with any information, no matter how small, to contact police immediately.
“Just call Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, 24 hours a day.
“Police have been working around the clock and I’m sure Abdul Basith’s family and friends are thankful for their dedication.
“I hope this reward will help identify the person or people responsible and bring this investigation to a close.”
Detectives attached to Operation Papa Senator, the ongoing police investigation into the October 25, 2017 homicide of Abdul Basith, are renewing their appeal for public assistance and are hopeful the announcement of a $250,000 reward will see an influx of new information.
Abdul Basith was attacked when he went outside of his St George Street home around 12.30am to check on a power outage.
He was located deceased in the front yard a short time later, having sustained a number of stab wounds.
Due to Abdul Basith being trilingual and having a culturally diverse associate network, a multi-language appeal will be issued by police, which will include four additional languages to the appeal in English.
Detective Acting Superintendent Craig Morrow said a team of detectives and specialist police have been working continually on this investigation and remain committed to finding the perpetrator and bringing them to justice.
“We are very hopeful that the announcement of a $250,000 reward will lead to someone contacting police and providing us with that crucial piece of information that will lead to a breakthrough,” Detective Acting Superintendent Morrow said.
“Abdul Basith’s family have naturally been devastated by his death and we are determined to find answers for them.”
