Be prepared over Easter when boating and camping

Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy
The Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham
Be careful in the water, on the water, camping and even with the backyard barbie, Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said today.
“Easter is a time to be with family and friends and a few simple precautions will ensure it is both enjoyable and safe,’’ Dr Lynham said.
Energex, Ergon Energy and Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland have joined forces this Easter to warn boaties to be aware of overhead powerlines and submarine power cables crossing waterways.
“Powerlines and cables crossing rivers and estuaries are charged with up to 132,000 volts of electricity and have the potential to make any accidental contact deadly,’’ Dr Lynham said.
“If any boaties do accidently become hooked up on a powerline or cable to keep away from the section of boat contacting the high voltage, avoid physically touching the water and phone Triple Zero, the VMR or Coast Guard.”
Boaties also should be aware of what is above their craft when sailing down all waterways.
“With yachts and even masts on trailers, be aware of overhead wires as well,’’ Dr Lynham said.
“And ensure everything about your vessel and motor is in tip-top condition.’’
Back on land, Dr Lynham said portable gas appliances like barbeques, refrigerators, camp cookers and lanterns can be very dangerous if not regularly checked for damage, transported safely, connected correctly and used according to manufacturer’s instructions.
“An unsafe BBQ can burn more than just the sausages. Misuse or unsafe handling can easily result in fire or explosion causing serious injury or death.
“Check that your LPG cylinder for any signs of damage on the cylinders or valves such as corrosion, damaged or clogged connectors, if it is damaged don’t use it - swap it for a new one immediately.’’
When camping Dr Lynham said that due to the recent weather and the likelihood of further rainfall, the Kidston Dam grounds located south of Einasleigh in Etheridge Shire were closed for all use, including camping, fishing and day trips due to flooding.
“Flood waters have damaged roads leading to the dam, those roads are closed and will remain closed over the Easter holiday period in the interest of community safety.
Other Queensland-owned dams and weirs are currently open and holidaymakers are urged to keep up to date via the DNRME website www.qld.gov.au/environment/water/catchments/state-owned-dams.
"Our dams are popular places for friends and families to visit over Easter, to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you, it’s important to camp only in designated camping areas and camp grounds.
“Unauthorised camping poses a fire risk, have inadequate sanitation and may have limited access for emergency services if something goes wrong.
“Leave the campsite the way you found it, take your rubbish with you or place it in the bins provided, and stick to designated walk trails and vehicle tracks.’’
Dr Lynham said for Queenslanders going away for the break, preparing your home before locking the door would save on costs, help the environment and reduce risk of damage caused by unforseen electrical faults.
“In the excitement of heading off on a well-deserved break it can be very easy to neglect the importance of energy efficiency and home safety,” hesaid.
“Televisions, microwaves, stereos, computers and other items usually have a stand-by mode which is indicated by a small light.
“Appliances can still be using up to 40% of their full running power on stand-by mode, which generates up to 150 kilograms of easily preventable greenhouse gas per year.
“It’s great practice to take a few minutes to go around your home and turn appliances off at the wall as stand-by mode can account for 10% of your electricity bill, plus it reduces the risk of fire.”
