The ability for transport crews to immediately respond to any road or rail issue during the Commonwealth Games has been given a major boost with the launch of the transport co-ordination centre on the Gold Coast.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey described the facility as the “nerve centre” for the games transport network.

“It will produce timely, consistent and effective decision making, response and messaging during GC2018 and beyond,” Mr Bailey said.

The custom-built, multi-agency Transport Coordination Centre (TCC) will be responsible for monitoring and responding to issues impacting road traffic, trains, buses, light rail and event shuttle buses during GC2018.

Mr Bailey said the centre was the focal point of a broader network of infrastructure the Palaszczuk Government had introduced to ensure the Games ran as smoothly as possible.

“The Gold Coast’s transport network has enhanced through an investment of almost $1 billion as part of preparedness for the Games, and to leave a lasting legacy,” he said.

“At any time, the TCC houses more than 100 experienced operators from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the City of Gold Coast, GOLDOC, and Roads and Maritime Services for cross border management.

“Representatives from QPS, QFES, QAS and ADF as well as public transport representatives from QR, light rail and bus operations will also play an active role in the centre.”

An Incident Management System (IMS) has been developed to support the TCC response coordination, by logging incident-related communications, reports and tasks, including at the other event cities of Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns.

Minister Bailey said an additional 52 new traffic cameras had been installed along the network to tap into real time information, and would remain in place following the Games.

“The centre will remain long after the GC2018’s closing ceremony as a legacy building detailing improved, ongoing, real-time advice for commuters, residents and visitors,” he said.

Approximately 6500 athletes and team officials, 1000 technical officials and 3000 accredited media are expected across GC2018 while another 16,000 workforce and volunteers and 1.5 million spectators will be provided with reliable, enjoyable and safe transport.
