Tourists travelling to the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be koala-fied to travel around the city with ease thanks to a limited edition commemorative go explore card.

The cards, which feature Games’ mascot Borobi, as well as other regular go explore cards, will be available from March 15.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said only 120,000 cards would be available for purchase, making them a much sought after memento from Australia’s largest sporting event this decade.

“I hope it’s not too much to bear, but there is a limited number of these go explore cards on offer, so get in soon,” Mr Bailey said.

“The go explore is an excellent option for visitors taking non-event travel on the Gold Coast during Games time.

“They will be a great souvenir of this exciting event and will only be available for purchase on the Gold Coast.”

Mr Bailey said the go explore cards featured Borobi in four unique designs, two adult and two child card designs. 

“Borobi, the GC2018 Mascot, is an energetic, sports-loving, unstoppable koala. Named after the local Yugambeh word for koala, he is thrilled the Games is being stages in his hometown,” Mr Bailey said.

“With a love for surfing, Borobi got his bright blue fur from the Gold Coast’s beautiful ocean waters.

“The card designs feature Borobi taking part in a selection of the sports that will be showcased at the GC2018 Commonwealth Games including athletics, basketball and beach volleyball.”

Mr Bailey said the $10 per adult per day or $5 per child per day go explore provided unlimited daily travel on all Gold Coast bus and tram services. 

“The go explore cards offer visitors and tourists attending GC2018 flexibility and value for money. Customers are able to reload up to eight day passes per card and can also travel on non-consecutive days,” he said.  

While free public transport is available for ticketed spectators travelling to and from competition events on the Gold Coast (travellers need to show their same day GC2018 ticket upon boarding) the go explore cards can be used for all other bus and tram travel on the Gold Coast.

Mr Bailey said the commemorative go explore cards would be available on the Gold Coast from any 7 Eleven, Night Owl, selected retailers, hotels, and visitor information desks from mid-March 2018.
