With only 32 days until the opening ceremony the Queen’s Baton has arrived in Queensland, marking the home stretch to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Having travelled 230,000km on a 388-day trip around the world, Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones today met the Queen’s Baton on Horn Island in the Torres Strait to signify the start of its travels through Queensland.

“It’s been right across the globe and finally the Queen’s Baton is in Queensland in the lead-up to the Games,” she said.

“Now it’s back on Queensland soil here in the Torres Strait, the Queen’s Baton Relay will continue around the state before the Baton arrives on the Gold Coast on April 1.

“We’re on the cusp of hosting the biggest event in the state’s history and the arrival of the Queen’s Baton is a reminder to Queenslanders that they can be part of history.

“We’ve spent years planning for the Commonwealth Games but now is the time for Queenslanders to enjoy the ride.

“I urge locals to check out the website and see the Baton on its way to the Commonwealth Games.”

Ms Jones said around 3800 batonbearers throughout Australia will have carried the Baton by April 4.

“The Queen’s Baton Relay helps us shine a light on some of the real gems in our local sporting communities,” she said.

“It gives Queenslanders the opportunity to take an active role in the lead-up to a history-making event.

“I’m proud to have been part of a Cabinet that chose to bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games – an event that will generate $4 billion for Queensland and create about 16,000 jobs.”
