North Queenslanders called on to remain vigilant with more heavy rainfall on the way

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford is warning North Queensland residents not to become complacent, with more heavy rainfall forecast for the region predicted to cause flash-flooding.

Mr Crawford said today (Thursday) locations likely to be affected by the deluge include Charters Towers, Townsville, Palm Island, Ayr, Ingham and Cardwell.

“Since 9am yesterday to 5am today (Thursday) some of the rainfall totals recorded have been 253mm at Bluewater, 214mm at Upper Black River, 191mm at Toomulla, 146mm at South Townsville and 129mm at Ayr,” Mr Crawford said.

“It’s now expected there could be heavy falls over 100mm during the morning as the weather system tracks west, which could lead to more flash-flooding,” he said.

Mr Crawford said extra Swift Water Rescue Crews have been deployed in the region – with teams responding to reports of a car stuck in Townsville floodwaters overnight.

“Four swift water personnel entered the water at Whites Creek to check a vehicle – and confirmed no-one was inside,” Mr Crawford said.

“Once again, I’m strongly advising people that you can never be too careful when it comes to flooded waters. Remember – if it’s flooded, forget it.

“Stop, think, and don’t drive through flooded water. Driving through flooded water puts you, your passengers and the people who need to rescue you at risk.”

Mr Crawford - who said the SES had received more than 50 tasks since Tuesday night - also warned people to keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
