The Honourable Cameron Dick

Drop into a Spit master plan pop-up session this weekend

The Gold Coast community are encouraged to drop in and have their say about the future of the Southport Spit at the first of 16 of pop-up sessions being held at various locations around the Gold Coast, starting with Marina Mirage on Saturday.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the Queensland Government wants to hear from the community and gather feedback on their experiences and aspirations for The Spit.

“We need community input to help develop a master plan for The Spit that will deliver a real community asset for the Gold Coast,” Mr Dick said.

“We’re kicking off our series of pop-up sessions this Saturday at Marina Mirage at 8am followed by a session on The Spit near the sea wall at midday, so I urge anyone who is interested in the future of The Spit to get involved.

“These sessions are the first of 16 scheduled pop-ups to be held throughout February and March on the Gold Coast in community hubs, such as parks, libraries and shopping centres.”

Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said at each of the interactive sessions, members of the community will be asked share what they currently like about The Spit, what they most value, and what they would like to see in the future.

“The project team will use this feedback to gain a comprehensive insight and understanding of the current site conditions, opportunities and challenges,” Ms Scanlon said.

Mr Dick said the community feedback will inform a major consultation event to be held in late April, which will enable key stakeholders to put forward their vision for the future of The Spit and contribute to setting the direction of the master plan.

“Gold Coast residents can make the most of this unique opportunity to help develop a master plan that creates jobs through tourism, entertainment and recreation, while preserving the character of The Spit,” Mr Dick said.

“The master plan will include input from the Gold Coast City Council and the Gold Coast Waterways Authority.
