107 Queenslanders recognised on Australia Day Honours List

 

Tennis legend Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, philanthropist Roy Thompson and champion golfer Karrie Webb are among the 107 Queenslanders recognised on this year’s Australia Day Honours List.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the honours acknowledged Australians who had made a significant contribution to their community or their chosen fields.

“Today we recognise some of our most outstanding Queenslanders, who have worked tirelessly to make our state a better place,” the Premier said.

“Across business, medicine, philanthropy, academia, sport and the arts, these Queenslanders have served to educate, motivate and inspire us through action.”

“Some of our honourees are household names, while others are quiet achievers, but all are deserving of our celebration today.”

This year three remarkable Australians who call Queensland home - Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, Professor Jennifer Martin and Roy Thompson - have been appointed Companions of the Order of Australia, which recognises the highest degree in service to Australia.

“Tennis icon Evonne Goolagong-Cawley continues to encourage indigenous children to lead healthy and active lives through her Evonne Goolagong Foundation,” she said.

“Roy Thompson has been an absolutely vital philanthropic supporter of institutions and charities across our State.”

“I’d also like to congratulate Professor Jennifer Martin, who as the Director of the Griffith Institute for Drug Discovery (GRIDD), is a homegrown, world leader in the fields of protein crystallography and biochemistry.

“I hope today’s honour, along with her ground-breaking research, will encourage more young women and girls to consider a career in science and innovation right here in Queensland.”

Queenslanders who were appointed Companions (AC) in the General Division include:

Mrs Evonne Fay GOOLAGONG-CAWLEY AO MBE, Noosa Heads, for eminent service to tennis as a player at the national and international level, as an ambassador, supporter and advocate for the health, education and wellbeing of young Indigenous people through participation in sport, and as a role model.

Professor Jennifer Louise MARTIN, Queensland, for eminent service to science, and to scientific research, particularly in the field of biochemistry and protein crystallography applied to drug-resistant bacteria, as a role model, and as an advocate for gender equality in science.

Mr Roy Francis THOMPSON, Maroochydore, for eminent service to the community through philanthropic support for a range of medical research, emergency rescue, educational, sporting and cultural organisations, and to the real estate and land development sector in Queensland.

Queenslanders who were appointed Officers (AO) in the General Division include:

Dr Peggy BROWN, Sanctuary Cove, for distinguished service to medical administration in the area of mental health through leadership roles at the state and national level, to the discipline of psychiatry, to education, and to health care standards.

Mr Philip Arthur HENNESSY, Queensland, for distinguished service to the business and accountancy sectors, to financial governance and education, and through support for women's health care, disability support and children's charitable groups.

Mr Christopher Patrick MAHER, Queensland, for distinguished service to community and international public health through technical, operational, and management roles in the global eradication of poliomyelitis.

Professor Laurence James WALSH, Ferny Hills, for distinguished service to dentistry, and to dental science education, as an academic and author, to improved health and safety standards, and through roles with professional associations.

Ms Karrie Ann WEBB AM, Ayr, for distinguished service to golf at the elite level as a player, to the development of female golfers, as a mentor and role model, and through charitable and community organisations.
