North Queensland fire and emergency services shine at Australia Day awards
North Queensland’s fire and emergency service personnel have been recognised in Townsville during Australia Day 2018 celebrations for their unwavering dedication and service to their local communities.
Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford today (Thursday) praised the 14 individuals on receiving their Australia Day Achievement Medallions.
Mr Crawford said the recipients were committed members of their community and a credit to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).
“On behalf of all Queenslanders I want to thank each and every award recipient for their selflessness, professionalism and dedication,” Mr Crawford said.
“They often work under extremely challenging conditions and never do so for reward or tributes. The Australia Day Achievement Medallions are presented to those who have performed excellent work above and beyond their normal course of duty.
“Those recognised today fit that bill and have provided significant contribution to the delivery of fire and emergency services in Queensland.”
Townsville Fire and Rescue Station Officer Mark King was recognised for his dedication and commitment to improving firefighting resources and services in rural and remote areas in North Queensland.
Four State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers were also recognised, including Magnetic Island Group Leader Murray Withers for his commitment to the Magnetic Island community and his perseverance developing a strong SES group.
Australia Day Appreciation Certificates were also presented during today’s ceremony to recognise individuals or organisations who have provided outstanding support to QFES.
Townsville business owner George Gatis was awarded for helping provide vehicles to QFES to ensure frontline services could get to where they were needed most during Tropical Cyclone Debbie.
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper, who presented today’s awards on behalf of Mr Crawford, said Mr Gatis “went above and beyond his obligations as a business owner to make himself available 24 hours a day during Cyclone Debbie”.
“While the community was preparing for the cyclone, George put aside his own preparations to ensure QFES operational personnel were provided with cars and busses so they could be transported to communities where they were needed,” Mr Harper said.
“George’s effort was a great example of a member of the community stepping up and helping our fire and emergency services at a crucial time. We rely a lot on our fire and emergency service personnel, but quite often they need the community’s support to carry out their task.”
QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the recipients had made outstanding contributions to their communities and the organisation.
“While their backgrounds and experiences may vary, they all share one common goal: devoting their time and expertise to community safety and serving Queenslanders in times of need,” Ms Carroll said.
“It is important to acknowledge the achievements of our workforce and we are proud of their ongoing efforts to protect Queensland communities.”
