A Rockhampton-based building company has secured a Queensland Government contract to build a new kitchen for the North Rockhampton Nursing Centre under the new Buy Queensland initiative.

Assistant Minister for Education and Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the $2.1 million contract was awarded to Hutchinson Builders, who will replace the existing facilities in the Ivy Baker wing with a modern kitchen.

“The North Rockhampton Nursing Centre is over 30 years old and is a 120 bed, high care nursing home,” Mrs Lauga said.

“These kitchen upgrades will be fantastic for residents and their families, but even more importantly this project will support employment for 15 local carpenters, concreters, bricklayers, plumbers and plasterers, which is great news for Rockhampton.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said that the Buy Queensland initiative, which came into effect for tenders from 1 September 2017, recognises the important role local businesses play in local community both economically and socially.

“The whole reason we’ve created this policy is to strengthen the chances of local businesses winning jobs in their own community,” Mr de Brenni said.

“It’s great to see a Rockhampton business win this contract to deliver upgraded facilities for the Nursing Centre, and I expect we will see more contracts awarded to local businesses under the Buy Queensland initiative.”
