The Palaszczuk Government has awarded five construction contracts under its Buy Queensland policy to Torres Strait Island Regional Council to provide new rain and town water tanks.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the Torres Strait Island Regional Council would undertake site preparation, laying concrete slabs and installation of the new tanks on Saibai Island.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to making sure that local businesses have every opportunity to tender for government contracts,” Ms Lui said.

“This project will support the jobs of 11 local trades, including plumbing, electrical, labourers, and administration, which is great news for workers in these communities.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said that the Buy Queensland policy, which came into effect for tenders from 1 September 2017, recognises the important role local businesses play in local community both economically and socially.

“The whole reason we’ve created this policy is to strengthen the chances of local businesses winning jobs in their own community,” Mr de Brenni said.

“It’s great to see the Torres Strait Island Regional Council win these contracts to deliver safe and secure water supply, and I expect we will see more contracts awarded locally under the Buy Queensland initiative.”
