Street upgrade to unlock Burnett Heads’ potential

Burnett Heads is set for a significant economic boost with the first sod turned today on the $6.6 million Town Centre Redevelopment project.

Acting Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe said the project, which is receiving more than $3 million in funding through the Palaszczuk Government’s Building our Regions program, will generate 20 jobs.

“This project will transform Burnett Heads’ Zunker Street into a pedestrian-friendly and attractive hub for business,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“The contractor Development Construction will redesign the area to include wider footpaths, landscaping, on-street car parking, public art, disabled parking spaces, smart technology upgrades including public Wi-Fi and sewerage infrastructure.

“Local shop owners will be able to provide footpath dining to their customers.

“Pedestrians will be able to walk from the Burnett River to the town centre on safer and wider footpaths with CCTV security cameras, shaded seating, bubblers with dog bowls, bike racks and rubbish bins.

“Additional parking will be provided in Sommerville Street and Hermans Road to offset changes to parking in Zunker Street.”

Mr Hinchliffe said the project is jointly funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program and the Bundaberg Regional Council.

Building our Regions is a $375 million targeted regional infrastructure program for local government projects.

There are four more projects in Bundaberg receiving Building our Regions funding:

• Bundaberg Aviation Precinct – Stage 3 ($2 million)
• Bundaberg Region Multi-use Sports and Community Centre – Stage 1 ($5 million)
• Bundaberg Sports and Community Centre – Stage 2 ($5 million)
• Rubyanna Wastewater Treatment Plant ($5 million)

The primary purpose of the Building our Regions program is to provide funding for critical infrastructure in regional areas of the state, while also generating jobs, fostering economic development and improving the liveability of regional communities.
