From the Gold Coast to Longreach, Bamaga to Cherbourg, women and girls across the state are getting ready to celebrate Queensland Women’s Week 2018.

Minister for Women Di Farmer said more than $150,000 in grants had now been awarded to organisations right across Queensland to help them mark Queensland Women’s Week.

Ms Farmer said the grants would help 60 organisations host activities and events during the week, which runs from 3-11 March.

“This is such a fantastic week, and has only grown each and every year and we want to build on that momentum and make this year’s celebrations even bigger and better,” she said.

“Whether it’s mental health first aid training in Cairns, a colour run in Cloncurry, or participating in more green time and less screen time in Brisbane, Queensland women will be coming together to focus on improving their health and wellbeing.

“But this is not just for women, we want to see all Queenslanders taking part and recognising that improving women’s wellbeing has benefits for families, children and the entire community.

“That’s why we’ve made it easy to get involved, with the Queensland Women’s Week website now up and running at www.qld.gov.au/womensweek.

“On this website people will find a calendar where they can promote their own events and check out events in their local area.”

Ms Farmer said the website would be expanded in 2018 with a range of downloadable resources, including social media graphics and recognition certificates for people holding events to use.

Ms Farmer announced the grants at North Star Football Club, which will receive a $2250 grant to host an International Women’s Day Cultural Diversity Showcase.

Member for Nudgee Leanne Linard said she was thrilled the club had received a grant.

“This event will promote positive social connections for girls and women in the local community as well as promote female inclusion in sport,” Ms Linard said.

“The celebrations here will help highlight the achievements of women and girls and will further encourage them to take an active role in improving their own health and wellbeing.”

Queensland Women’s Week also incorporates International Women’s Day on Thursday, 8 March where women across the world will celebrate the achievements of women and girls.

Some other events being held as part of the week include:

  • a virtual walk around Queensland
  • road trauma prevention training in Gympie
  • skills-sharing workshops in Ravenshoe
  • an active lifestyle taster program in Nundah, and
  • a nutrition and meal adaptation workshop in Chillagoe

The Queensland Women’s Week grants program is being run through a partnership between the Queensland Government and YWCA Queensland.
