Sunshine Coast boaties reaping rewards in time for Christmas

Christmas has arrived early for Sunshine Coast boaties with two recreational boating projects delivered in time for the busy holiday period.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said upgrades to the Fishermans Road boat ramp were now complete and the new pontoon at Mooloolaba’s Penny Lane would open to the public at the weekend.

‘‘Today’s announcement is great news for the Sunshine Coast as many recreational boat owners prepare to enjoy the Christmas break on the water,’’ Mr Bailey said.

‘‘The completion of these two projects also brings the total number of recreational boating facilities completed on the Sunshine Coast in recent months to three with the completion of Currimundi Lake’s Lara Street boat ramp completed in October.

“I’m pleased to say works were completed on time which means they are ready for the holiday season.’’

Mr Bailey said the upgrade to the Maroochydore Fishermans Road boat ramp meant the facility was rebuilt to current standards and now included a new floating walkway.

“The new Penny Lane pontoon at Mooloolaba’s State Boat Harbour is a welcome addition to the harbour with the number of boats accessing the local waterways on the rise,’’ Mr Bailey said. 

‘‘The new pontoon will cater to increasing demands on local marine infrastructure in the area and provide a great asset for the local boating community to years to come.’’

Funding for the projects was provided from the Queensland Government’s Marine Infrastructure Fund which the Palaszczuk Government recently committed to boosting by a further $30 million.

“With an increasing number of boaties accessing our waterways, it’s important we continue to upgrade much-needed facilities like these to meet current and future demand,” Mr Bailey said.
