Brisbane cyclists can now pedal further than ever before on the city’s state of the art Veloway (V1) Cycleway after the $24 million Stage D section opened today.

The new section links Lewisham Street in Greenslopes-Tarragindi to O’Keefe Street Buranda, meaning cyclists can now enjoy a seamless journey from the CBD to Holland Park West.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, an avid cyclist, said this section of the V1 was a critical link in the 17km cycle path connecting the CBD to Eight Mile Plans.

“Whether you ride for transport or recreation, this is a very exciting stage in the progress of the V1,” Mr Bailey said.

“We know more Queenslanders want to cycle, and off-road bike paths like the V1 make cycling safer and encourage ‘more cycling, more often’.

“I am looking forward to taking my first ride on this section of the V1.”

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the most recent stage of works included the installation of an 83-metre long cycle bridge over Lewisham Street, as well as bridges over the very busy Cornwall and Juliette streets and a ramp leading to O’Keefe Street.

“The new Veloway elevates cyclists up and over two of the busiest intersections on the southside which will save up to ten minutes travel time as well huge safety improvements,” she said.

“Stage D also supported 43 jobs over the life of the project.”

Member for Greenslopes Joe Kelly said the project was transforming Brisbane’s south side.

“The completion of this stage means that Stages A to D are now complete and we have recently committed a further $45 million for construction of Stage E, which will connect Birdwood Road in Holland Park West to Gaza Road in Tarragindi,” Mr Kelly said.

“About 1600 cyclists a day use the V1, up from around 1000 per day in 2011.”

The Veloway 1 (V1) is a dedicated three-metre wide cycling freeway that, once complete, will connect cyclists along a separated 17-kilometre journey from Brisbane city to the Gateway Motorway off-ramp at Eight Mile Plains (along Pacific Motorway).
