Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

The nation’s first Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) has opened today on the Southport–Burleigh Road as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $160 million Commonwealth Games roads upgrade program.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said today’s announcement was nearly the last in the program to open with the final project due to be finished in the new year.

‘‘This innovative intersection design will be a congestion buster for users of the busy Bundall Road and Salerno Street intersections,” Mr Bailey said.

“The introduction of the CFI has created two new right-hand turn lanes, into Salerno Street, creating an additional gateway to Surfers Paradise.

“This intersection will allow for the road to carry a far greater capacity at a much-improved flow rate and has also widened the length of the road and bridges to include an additional lane in both directions.’’

Mr Bailey said the intersection was different to anything the Gold Coast had seen before and safety of road users was a priority.

“We ask road users to take extra care when travelling through the new layout, drive to the new conditions and obey all new signage and road markings,’’ he said.

The final project is the Gooding Drive Roundabout and the Palm Meadows Drive intersection upgrade which is due for completion in the first quarter of 2018.

Southport–Burleigh Road North upgrade project was finished in June of 2017 and the Southport–Burleigh Road South upgrade project was completed in February 2017.

112 jobs have been created over the life of the Southport–Burleigh Road project.

Improvements made will ensure capacity of the road network is expanded ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and will leave a lasting legacy for motorists long after the games close.
