Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy
The Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham

Job growth continues in regional Queensland with new and existing resources projects recruiting more than 500 jobs in the Far North and North West.

Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham welcomed news from two of Queensland’s mining giants, Rio and Glencore, that they were recruiting for their operations at Weipa, Mount Isa and the Lady Loretta Mine.

Rio Tinto is recruiting 100 jobs for its existing mines at Andoom and East Weipa and the new Amrun mine between Weipa and Aurukun.

Glencore is recruiting for more than 200 operational jobs at its Mount Isa copper and zinc operations, as well as up to 250 new jobs to restart its moth-balled Lady Loretta zinc mine northwest of Mount Isa.

”The resources sector supports one in seven jobs in Queensland and clearly will continue to be a major contributor to our regional economies and the royalties that help fund our schools and hospitals,” Dr Lynham said.

“The Palaszczuk Government will continue to provide sound economic management, support for innovation and stable government that underpins ongoing private sector investment and job creation.”
