JCU receives Palaszczuk Government Engaging Science Grant

James Cook University is among 16 recipients sharing in the latest round of the Palaszczuk Government’s Advance Queensland Engaging Science Grants.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland and Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke said today JCU had received $8949 for their Deadly Science Getaway project, designed to ignite passion for science among young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women from remote communities.

“The Palaszczuk Government understands the important role researchers play in delivering project that engage people with science,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“We are encouraging our young people to explore opportunities in their everyday lives, and hopefully into the future.”

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch said JCU was among round three recipients sharing in $142,185 under the government’s Advance Queensland Engaging Science Grants.

Ms Enoch said the grants aim to prepare students for the jobs of the future and develop their skills in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and innovation.

She said the Advance Queensland Engaging Science Grants are designed to support scientists, researchers, science communicators, journalists, teachers and community groups to deliver projects, events and activities that increase the profile of science in Queensland.

“It is important to expose as many young people as possible to the breadth of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) opportunities so they can consider the many possible career options available,” Ms Enoch said.

Advance Queensland is the Palaszczuk Government’s $420 million suite of initiatives to transform the state’s economy, create knowledge jobs of the future and build Queensland’s reputation as a global innovation and investment destination.
