Modern Day Corroboree Marks Queensland's Biggest NAIDOC Celebration
Thousands of people are expected to embrace traditional and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at Queensland’s premier NAIDOC Week event in South Brisbane tomorrow.
Minister for Local Government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Mark Furner, who will officially open the event, said the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day had become a modern day corroboree, with clan groups from around the state gathering to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
“Musgrave Park holds special significance for many Aboriginal tribal groups in Brisbane which makes it the perfect place to celebrate one of the oldest living cultures in the world,” Minister Furner said.
“This event brings together all Australians to create long lasting partnerships for the betterment of our communities.”
Also attending the event will be Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy and Minister for Small Business Leeanne Enoch. She said the Palaszczuk Government was delighted to support a range of celebrations happening around the state as part of NAIDOC Week.
“The Musgrave Park Family Fun Day does such a wonderful job of sharing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and perspectives, and the Palaszczuk Government is proud to contribute $50,000 towards this event.”
“In line with this year’s NAIDOC Week theme – Our Languages Matter – $1 million is also being invested in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to record, teach and preserve Queensland’s unique Indigenous languages for future generations.”
Chairwoman of the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day Natalie Alberts said the Palaszczuk Government’s contribution allowed the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day to go from strength to strength every year.
“It takes months and months of organisation to put together this day and the support of the Government shows their great commitment to this event,” Ms Alberts said.
“We have had people from around Australia asking to be involved and without this very important contribution, we would not be able to accommodate the incredible growth we have seen.”
From humble beginnings some 26 years ago, the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day has grown into the single, largest NAIDOC celebration in Australia.
Tomorrow’s event promises a range of highlights including Indigenous inspired cuisine, traditional and contemporary musical performances and a record number of stalls.
