Driver safety, traffic flow and congestion will be improved with the installation of six new Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) on the Western Freeway.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the new signs will be installed on the Western Freeway outbound between Waverly Road and Figtree Pocket Road overpasses as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to building safer road networks.

“VSLS signs display reduced speed limits when there is congestion, accidents or bad weather to improve safety and improve traffic flow,” Mr Bailey said.

"Outbound motorists will not only benefit from the improved safety but will also experience better travel times,”

“The signs aim to reduce the frequency of rear-end crashes on the motorway

Mr Bailey said VSLS have been used at other locations across Queensland to manage speed limits.

“The signs will operate by monitoring live traffic conditions via CCTV cameras and in-pavement vehicle detectors.

“If vehicles are approaching congestion, the signs will reduce the speed limit to 80km/h.

“The speed limit will continue to be reduced in 20km/h increments to slow vehicles down safely.

“This $1million project is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s State Road Network Upgrade program and this project is just one of the steps we are taking to reduce the potential of accidents across Queensland.”

Mr Bailey said a traffic study was undertaken along the Western Freeway and Centenary Highway corridor.

“This study recommended the installation of VSLS along this section between Waverly Road overpass and Figtree Pocket Road overpass,” he said.

The VSLS will be installed in stages, between early July and late September 2017.

The new speed signs are expected to be operational in October 2017 on the western freeway:

  • after Waverley Road Overpass
  • near Moggill Road off-ramp
  • on Moggill Road on-ramp
  • after Russell Terrace / Moggill Road on-ramp
  • after Jerrang Street Overpass
  • on Figtree Pocket Road on-ramp
