The Honourable Steven Miles

A Landcare community group will create a koala corridor in Toogoolawah thanks to new funds from the Palaszczuk Government.

Speaking at the Wild Koala Day celebrations at Old Petrie Town, Environment Minister Steven Miles said Brisbane Valley Kilcoy Landcare Inc would receive $7,940 to continue developing koala habitat.

“This organisation is truly committed to protecting and preserving the environment. Its volunteers have planted thousands of trees since forming 27 years ago, and this grant is going to help them continue this wonderful work,” Mr Miles said.

“They will use the funding to create the South Toogoolawah Koala Habitat Enhancement Corridor between Toogoolawah-Biarra Road and The Condensery Art Gallery.

“Across 1.8km of land, they will plant 600 trees, weed 2.5ha of land and develop methods to help control feral deer and rabbits.

“They've already restored the riparian zone and waterway along the upper Brisbane River at Harlin.

Brisbane Valley Kilcoy Landcare Inc Chairman David Matthews thanked Mr Miles and the Queensland Government.

“We appreciate this funding because it will assist us in continuing our habitat restoration projects across the Stanley and upper Brisbane River catchments,” Mr Matthews said.

“We want to create a new koala corridor that will provide a link for the Toogoolawah koala from one habitat area to another.

“This work will increase the koala habitat area and improve the existing habitat area.

“Over the years we have planted thousands of trees and assist landholders to revegetate their properties to provide habitat for native animals.”

Mr Miles said the Community Sustainability Action grants are providing $12 million over three years to eligible community groups and individuals for innovative projects which seek to address climate change and conserve Queensland’s natural and built environment.
