Attorney-General pays tribute to retiring Senior Judge Administrator Justice John Byrne

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath has paid tribute to Queensland’s Senior Judge Administrator and judge, Justice John Byrne, who will be retiring in August.

Mrs D’Ath has recognised the Honourable Justice Byrne’s career on the bench, which has spanned 28 years.

“Justice Byrne’s long-standing contribution to the Queensland legal system has been significant and I would like to thank him for his service, professionalism and dedication,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“His legal intellect and leadership to the court have been paramount in his important role as Senior Judge Administrator, managing the trial division of the Supreme Court of Queensland.”

Justice Byrne was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1989. He is a Life Member of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration and an Officer of the Order of Australia.

He has also served as a member of the Council of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration and also chaired the advisory committee to establish the Law School at Griffith University.

In 2007 he was appointed Senior Judge Administrator, which is responsible for the administration of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court.

Mrs D’Ath thanked Justice Byrne for giving advanced warning of his August retirement.

Mrs D’Ath also said a decision would be made in the future about Justice Byrne’s replacement.

“I will be writing to the Judicial Appointments Advisory Panel to consider the role of the Senior Judge Administrator and who would be appropriate to appoint to that role, and any subsequent vacancy in the Supreme Court.”
