The Honourable Grace Grace

Multicultural Affairs Minister Grace Grace has officially launched a new multicultural policy and action plan that will support people of all cultural backgrounds across Queensland.

Our story, our future and its action plan are the Queensland Government’s first multicultural policy and action plan under the Multicultural Recognition Act 2016.

Ms Grace said the new policy recognises the contributions Queenslanders from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds make to the economic, social and cultural development of our state.

“’Our story, our future’ recognises the value of multiculturalism and provides us with a clear direction for government action to ensure everyone can benefit from our diversity,” she said.

“We have a long and proud tradition of welcoming people into our communities, regardless of race, culture or religion – and I know this policy will complement that tradition.

“Migrants and refugees bring new perspectives and skills to Queensland, enriching our communities and growing our economy.”

The policy and action plan were developed in consultation with stakeholders across Queensland and with the Multicultural Queensland Advisory Council and Interim Multicultural Community Reference Group.

Ms Grace said the action plan would include a range of measures to support migrants and refugees.

“For example, the Department of Education and Training will assist people from culturally-diverse backgrounds who are unemployed or under-employed in the labour market to enter and stay in the workforce through programs delivered under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative,” she said.

“Importantly, “Our story, our future makes a clear statement against racism in all its forms, and a commitment to supporting refugees and asylum seekers living in Queensland regardless of where they came from or how they got here.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to an inclusive, harmonious and united Queensland – a place where opportunities are maximised and the contribution of all members of society is valued and recognised.

“The new multicultural policy and action plan will help us make that goal a reality.”
