The Honourable Curtis Pitt

Treasurer and Minister for Sport, Curtis Pitt, says sport and recreation groups in the Ipswich region will receive almost $350,000 in the latest round of grants under two state government schemes.

Mr Pitt said grants made under two statewide programs would help clubs, associations, and local councils to establish new or upgraded facilities, buy new equipment, and encourage greater participation at the grassroots level.

Mr Pitt said the latest funding to clubs and organisations across Queensland included:

  • more than $13 million in statewide funds to support 164 capital works projects in the latest round of the Get Playing Places and Spaces program providing up to $100,000 to develop new, upgraded or replacement sport and recreation infrastructure, and
  • $3.5 million to 539 clubs and organisations under the Get Going Clubs program providing grants up to $7500 to encourage greater participation in sport and recreation in local communities.

“I look forward to seeing the new, improved and replacement infrastructure projects in communities throughout or region as a result of this latest round of the Get Playing Places and Spaces program — ranging from playing fields and courts, through to clubhouses and new lights,” Mr Pitt said.

Assistant Minister of State Assisting the Premier and Member for Ipswich, Jennifer Howard, said the funding boost for local sport and recreation groups was welcome and recognised their contribution to the community.

“The latest grants will also be welcome by the many volunteers who keep our clubs going,” Ms Howard said.

Member for Bundamba, Jo-Ann Miller, said the funds would improve club facilities and also their administration.

“Sporting clubs depend on those behind the scenes just as much as they do on those who take the field and play the game,” she said.

“Grants that help administrators become better at their jobs in an increasingly complex environment will pay dividends for all clubs and their members and supporters.”

Member for Ipswich West, Jim Madden, the latest round of grants will see local clubs buy new equipment, conduct training or accreditation courses, and conduct activities to encourage new members to sign up.

“These funds are an investment in our local community and its sporting future,” Mr Madden said.
