Petrie firefighters are better equipped to protect their community following the opening of a new fire station earlier today.
Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan and Member for Kallangur Shane King attended the opening.
Minister Ryan said the new station would ensure firefighters continued to deliver world class services to the people of Petrie.
“The Petrie Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) team can now continue protecting local residents for many more years to come thanks to this new $4.2 million facility,” he said.
“The Petrie FRS has been providing vital services for 50 years and it is pleasing to see their abilities enhanced with the opening of this facility today.”
The Petrie station crew services an area including Narangba, Mango Hill, Murrumba Downs, Kurwongbah, Whiteside, Cashmere, Brendale, Strathpine and Warner.
“During the 2015-16 financial year they provided primary response to 667 incidents and they have already responded to 240 incidents this financial year,” Minister Ryan said.
“These incidents include road crash rescues, grass and wildfires, hazardous conditions and structural fires.
“With the new site also housing the Brisbane Region’s Northern Zone, Petrie Area Command and iZone offices, the support provided by staff at this station stretches throughout the north of Brisbane.”
Mr King said the new facility would significantly enhance the capability of firefighters and officers based at Petrie to assist their community during a range of emergency situations.
He said a number of Petrie firefighters were also awarded for bravery and skill at the official opening ceremony.
“Firefighters perform challenging tasks every day and put their lives at risk to protect their communities, but these firefighters have gone above and beyond their duties to ensure the safety of local residents,” Mr King said.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Deputy Commissioner for Operations and Emergency Management Mark Roche said six firefighters were awarded Commissioner’s Unit Citations and one firefighter the Commissioner’s Commendation of Notable Action.
“Today is an opportunity for the Petrie community to celebrate the enhancement of local firefighting capability as well as the recognition of brave and skilled firefighters based at the Petrie station,” Mr Roche said.
