Brisbane International returns for a further five years

Queensland will continue to attract the world’s best tennis players with a new deal securing the Brisbane International for a further five years.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones joined John Millman today to announce the new deal.

“The Brisbane International is a must-see event on Queensland’s summer sporting calendar,” Ms Jones said.

“It brings significant exposure to Queensland as one of the first international tournaments of the tennis year, as well as attracting many locals who get to compete in front of a home crowd.

“The Queensland Government’s renewed support through Tourism and Events Queensland ensures this tournament continues to deliver benefits for Queensland.”

Ms Jones said the Brisbane International 2017 would attract the world’s best tennis players including Rafael Nadal, Angelique Kerber, Stan Warwinka, Milos Raonic and Garbiñe Muruguza.

“We are also excited to announce today that Sam Stosur, Bernard Tomic and John Millman will compete in the Brisbane International 2017,” she said.

“We expect 100,000 tennis fans at this year’s tournament and sold out crowds for the finals weekend.

“Events such as this contribute to Brisbane’s tourism industry, which generates $6.3 billion for the local economy and supports close to 65,000 jobs.”

Brisbane International Tournament Director Geoff Quinlan said the tournament was delighted to partner with Tourism and Events Queensland for another five years.

“TEQ has played a significant part in growing the Brisbane International into one of the highest profile international sporting events in Queensland.”

TEQ CEO Leanne Coddington said securing marquee events delivered ongoing benefits for the state.

“TEQ has grown Queensland’s calendar of events into a $460 million asset for the state, which drives visitation and promotes Queensland’s amazing destinations,” Ms Coddington said.

“The tournament is a highlight on our It’s Live! in Queensland calendar which sets the scene each January for a year of world-class events across the state.”

Brisbane International will be held at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson from 1 - 8 January 2017.
