The Honourable Bill Byrne

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and Fire and Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne have paid tribute to fallen firefighters on Firefighters Remembrance Day today.

Minister Byrne said each year, the tenth day of the tenth month was a day of reflection for firefighters across the State.

“Firefighters Remembrance Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge and recognise the dedication firefighters display to protect Queenslanders,” he said.

“Each day, firefighters face uncertainty in their line of duty, sacrificing their own safety in order to protect lives and properties of the community.

“They respond to a wide variety of dangerous and hazardous incidents, and their commitment to protecting others during these incidents is nothing short of courageous.”

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said 51 Queensland firefighters who lost their lives on duty since 1877 were remembered at ceremonies statewide.

She said firefighters also paused for one minute’s silence at 10am to acknowledge the sacrifices of fallen firefighters.

“Flags at fire stations will fly at half-mast to honour those who have tragically lost their lives and as a mark of appreciation for the risks our firefighters face every time they clock on,” Ms Carroll said.

“Our workforce takes on unique roles, responding to incidents without hesitation, and firefighters continuously put themselves in uncertain situations to carry out their duties.

“Today, we will stand together to acknowledge this risk and remember those who lost their lives during operations.”

A number of QFES commemorative services were held throughout the State.
